I'M NOT DIABETIC, SHOULD I MONITOR MY BLOOD SUGAR?

I'M NOT DIABETIC, SHOULD I MONITOR MY BLOOD SUGAR?

And the simple answer is YES but not as much as someone with diabetes

Many of us tend to believe that only people living with diabetes should monitor their blood sugar but no....even those without diabetes need to monitor their blood sugar. However, the frequency in which someone with diabetes monitors their sugars is quite different from someone who's not diabetic.

For the non-diabetic, blood sugar testing is recommended atleast once every three years  while for the diabetic, atleast 1 or 2 times daily depending on many factors.

You need to monitor your blood sugar for the following reasons:

  • Detecting prediabetes. When you check your blood sugar you'll definitely be aware of the trends and easily detect any changes in the readings. In prediabetes blood sugar is slightly high, but not high enough to meet the definition of diabetes. For healthy people, blood sugar testing is typically recommended every three years or so; if prediabetes is diagnosed, repeat testing is recommended more often at least yearly.
  • Knowing your blood sugar readings can help you make changes to your lifestyle habits to keep it in the recommended range that will help you prevent diabetes or improve your general wellbeign.
  • Having more information about your body may provide you with a feeling of control over your health, even if you take no immediate action.
  • Curiosity. It's interesting how it's tempting to gather information about our bodies even when we're not sure what to do with this information.

Here's the essence to carry forward: monitor your blood sugar atleast once every three years or even atleast once every year, it does you not harm but good!
